Overview of the Course

The Bachelor of Networking (BNET) was developed after extensive consultation with industry and senior academics. It is based on international best practice for undergraduate courses in information technology and networking.

More importantly, The BNET emphasises professional and interpersonal skills that will help graduates achieve satisfying careers in IT. Students also develop skills in lifelong learning, problem solving, and research. Key features of the BNET include hands on practical experience with the latest networking technology, studio-based collaborative learning, and industry-based projects. The course also incorporates significant course content and an elective specialisation in network security, an area of extreme importance for applications in the public and private sector.

The programme is accredited by ACS (Australian Computer Society).

Aim of the Course

The Bachelor of Networking prepares graduates for a professional career in networking specializing in network security, network enterprise management and wireless and mobile technologies. Graduates of the Bachelor of Networking gain a solid understanding of the underlying theories and concepts; they will also gain practical, hands-on experience with the relevant technology. Students are also prepared to undertake postgraduate study.

Key Features:

The Bachelor of Networking offers the following key features:

  • Core Knowledge in IT and Networking: The Bachelor of Networking incorporates the Core Knowledge in IT that is recommended by the Australian Computing Society and the ACM. The Bachelor of Networking covers most of the ACM’s Core Knowledge in Networking and System Administration.
  • Hands on practical work and industry-relevant material: The course includes a large amount of practical, hands-on work with networking technology. In the labs, students gain experience with Cisco networks; they also gain experience with Unix and Windows operating systems.
  • Studio-based learning: The BNET emphasises participative learning where students carry out case studies and projects in a collaborative learning community that simulates the working environment. This will help graduates obtain key employable skills such as communication, collaboration, and self direction.
  • Security: The degree features significant unit content and an elective specialization in security. Network security is a critical area for applications in the private and public sectors.
  • Industry-based projects: BNET students complete a final-year capstone project that will be based on a real application in industry or in an organisation. This will allow students to bring together and strengthen the knowledge and skills they have gained during the program. It will also ensure that they have the capability to take on employment upon graduation.
  • Wireless and mobile technologies: The degree features significant unit content in wireless networks and a specialization in mobile technologies. These are key emerging areas of networking.

Teaching methodology and assessment

The course is delivered in a small-class environment through lectures, labs, studio-based learning, tutorials and individual consultation. Where possible, case-study analysis and problem-solving approaches are adopted to enhance student learning.

Assessment is continuous during the semester, and consists of tutorial work, individual and group assignments, class participation, presentations, tests and final examinations. In each unit, the final examination can vary depending on each unit structure.

Bachelor of Networking - Summary of unit outlines

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Networking is accredited by the Victoria Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and is registered with the Australian Government through the Commonwealth Register of International Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Applications have been submitted for accreditation by the Australian Computer Society.

Employability

The following are some of the career opportunities for graduates of the Bachelor of Networking:

Network Architects, network engineers, Systems engineers, Help desk support, Network analyst, Systems analyst, Network security specialist, Mobile applications developer etc.

Eligibility

As a minimum applicants must have successfully completed a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education or equivalent. Applicants with overseas qualifications must have an appropriate qualification recognized by their home country regulatory bodies as equivalent to at least an Australian Year 12 Level.

IELTS overall score 6.0 (Academic Module) with no individual band score less than 5.5, or equivalent.

Course Credits

Recognition of prior learning is available, especially for those who have completed studies in the areas of Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering.
