Good Reasons To Study English at
Melbourne Institute of Technology
1. General English and English for Academic Preparation Courses.
The General English Course
At Melbourne Institute of Technology, students are actively involved in their learning process with the guidance of their teachers and support of their classmates. The courses are structured to give students as much practice as possible so they may reach their full potential as English language learners.
The General English Course focuses on developing practical survival skills in Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate level students. These include understanding directions and following instructions, describing people and places, recounting experiences, completing transactions, expressing opinions and being successful in social situations by engaging in polite communication strategies. In listening and reading classes students learn vocabulary associated with a different topic every week, then develop confidence in using the learnt language by presenting weekly writing and fortnightly speaking assessment tasks.
The English for Academic Preparation Course
The EAP course is designed to give students an introduction to the local culture and expectations of Australian tertiary study.
As most students intend to proceed to courses at Diploma, Bachelor, or Post-Graduate level, the EAP course is designed to enable them to master the prerequisite skills in English necessary to enter, and succeed in these courses.
The skills include essay and report writing, oral presentation and debating, which form the basis of assessment. Avoiding plagiarism by introducing effective referencing, note taking and summary skills is included. Based on assessment tasks, the course is practical and allows students to develop the necessary skills for study. Study skills are integrated by themes offering theory and practice in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The English for Academic Preparation (EAP) course is appropriate for students who have not reached the IELTS prerequisite for entry into tertiary courses of their choice. Students who are lacking 0.5 to 1.0 points for Masters, Bachelor or Diploma courses may undertake ten to twenty weeks of EAP. In other words, ten weeks of EAP is equivalent to 0.5 of an IELTS score.
This course is ideal for students wishing to undertake higher education in Australia.
2. Class Variety
Students can join ELICOS classes at the beginning of any week because every week of a course is a self-contained unit. Courses are structured around different themes each week that explore interesting issues. Students also have the opportunity to use the vocabulary they learn in listening and reading classes in their writing assignments and oral presentations. This accelerates the natural learning process by reinforcing the language.
Afternoon communicative activities are designed to be fun and improve pronunciation and fluency. They include drama, pronunciation, conversation, discussion and games. There are regular excursions, which are largely based on student requests and are a fun way of introducing students to the local culture.
3. Balanced Skills
The timetable is structured to give equal time to reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills so that students receive a balanced program and are given the opportunity to improve in all areas. Grammar is also included.
4. Good Teachers
All the English teachers at Melbourne Institute of Technology are employed on the basis of their love of teaching. MIT only employs teachers who have excellent qualifications and extensive experience in the academic field and in teaching English to overseas students. Our teachers are sensitive to the needs of students from different cultural backgrounds and can understand the difficulties living in a foreign country largely because many have lived overseas themselves. MIT prides itself on providing a high quality and personalised service where each student is treated as an individual and with respect. To ensure that our teachers provide a high standard of service, students are asked to assess the quality of their teaching in an anonymous survey at the end of each semester.
5. Student Feedback
In order to ensure that Melbourne Institute of Technology maintains a high quality of customer service, we invite students to fill out a Student Satisfaction Survey from time to time. This covers the areas of administration, teachers, classes, course content and facilities. Our motto is: If you like us, tell your friends. If you don’t like us, tell us.
6. Individual Attention
Class sizes are kept small which enables teachers to give more attention to individual students and focus on their particular language problems. In addition, students having particular difficulties in coping with classes may be able to get individual tuition at no extra cost. Students are given the opportunity to participate fully and develop their language skills with increasing confidence.
7. Convenient Location
Melbourne Institute of Technology is located in 388, Lonsdale Street close to Bourke Street Mall and Melbourne Central Station.
8. State of the Art Computers
Our state-of-the-art computer laboratories are allocated class time when students may conduct background research for their assignments on the Internet, develop writing skills in word-processing essays and reports for class, and practise English in a range of online interactive language learning activities. The computer laboratories are also available outside class time to encourage students to develop their computer skills.
9. Recognised Accreditation
Melbourne Institute of Technology is fully accredited by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme as a provider of English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS). In fact, NEAS has endorsed the MIT ELICOS Program as “operating at a high standard” and providing an “overall quality service…to…students.”
