Airport reception

Airport reception service is available to international students arriving at Melbourne, Avalon or Sydney airport, upon request. Students will be met at the Arrivals hall and taken to their accommodation.

Airport reception is usually undertaken as part of the airport pickup/accommodation package, and bookings must be made one week in advance, prior to the student’s arrival.

Accommodation

Homestay

Living with a local family or resident, is a good preferred option for international students wanting to improve their English and experience the Australian lifestyle.

Costs (see page _) include a furnished bedroom, electricity, gas, water and three meals per day. Students must prepare breakfast and lunch, the host prepares dinner. Students are also expected to contribute to the household chores such as keeping their rooms tidy and clean, washing their own dishes and clothing.

Student hostels

There are many privately run student hostels located near both MIT Melbourne and Sydney campuses. Unlike backpacker hostels, these hostels provide a longer term accommodation for students.

Facilities vary from hostel to hostel, however most can provide furnished or unfurnished single or shared rooms, and provide access to communal lounge, kitchen, bathroom and laundry. Some hostels also offer meals. Cost generally includes water, gas and electricity.

Private rental and share accommodation

You could choose to rent a house or an apartment with friends or other students, through the private rental market, which can offer an independent and private long term accommodation.

Costs of renting a place vary depending on the location, the type of property and the number of people sharing. Most rental properties are not furnished and do not include meals, so you will need to consider additional costs such as buying furniture, telephone connection, gas, water, electricity and food.

Since rental accommodation cannot be pre-booked, you will need to choose a short-term accommodation for when you first arrive, then when you are settled you can look for rental accommodation. MIT Student Services can advice you on location, and provide assistance where possible if you are encountering difficulties renting.
