Course description

Course objectives

The Bachelor of Business Information Systems examines both the organisational and technological issues that are needed for the analysis and design of business information systems with a strong emphasis on electronic commerce. The course provides a state-of-the-art programme that considers modern principles and theories of computing together with the practical applications of technology. The Bachelor of Business Information Systems aims to provide students with the appropriate knowledge, skills and values to be effective in modern business environments.

On completion of this course students should be able to:

  • understand the different types of information technology tools and their applications;
  • manage the impact of technology in organisations;
  • understand the role of technology in managing knowledge and information;
  • critically evaluate currently existing technology systems and new developments;
  • become familiar with the latest developments in information technology;
  • understand the organisational settings in which information systems are used;
  • recognise the threats and opportunities of technology in business;
  • show an awareness of ethics and social implications of their interest area; and
  • understand the role of modern information systems in society and business.

Career opportunities

Students from the Bachelor of Business Information Systems will be well prepared for careers as information systems developers, system analyst managers, system designers, information managers, electronic commerce managers, database administrators, consultants, and company managers.

Scope

This programme provides the appropriate knowledge, skills and values to be effective in modern business environments. Throughout the course students will become familiar with the latest developments in IT, and understand the different types of information technology tools and their applications. They will understand the role of technology in managing knowledge and information and be capable of critically evaluating currently existing technology systems and new developments. They will develop an understanding of the organisational settings of technology in business. An understanding of the role of modern information systems in society and business is also developed.

The core of the programme consists of both business and information technology units. Business units provide the business practice framework for information systems development and the information technology units provide the knowledge and technical skills required.

Course structure

The course consists of 24 units and is normally 3 years full-time. The core of the programme consists of 16 Business and Information technology units. Five business electives and 3 computing electives complete the programme.

Academic requirements

As a minimum, successful completion of Australian Year 12, or equivalent.

Credit for prior study
