Wayne is a Professor Emeritus of Federation University, where he served as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Research) from 2001 until he retired in 2010. His other academic appointments have included Deputy Vice President (Academic) at Deakin University, Deputy Chair of Academic Board at the University of Queensland where he held a professorial appointment and was Head of Veterinary Pathology. Professor Robinson also held academic positions in Veterinary Pathology at Murdoch University, Ohio State University and the University of Melbourne.

In June 2010 Wayne accepted the position of Chair of the Academic Board at the Melbourne Institute of Technology and in 2014 was appointed Deputy Director of the Institute’s Board of Directors. Over the period 2010-2017, he led the development of academic plans, policies and procedures in the broad areas of learning and teaching, scholarship and research for the Institute. He has a broad interest in the development and implementation of these areas in private higher education sector.

Wayne also chaired the Chairs of Academic Boards Forum for non-university higher education providers from 2013 until August 2017; is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute; and was Chair of the Faculty Campaign Advisory Board for the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Science at the University of Melbourne.

Wayne has also contributed to the advancement of knowledge in veterinary pathology and infectious disease, tertiary education and university leadership. He has published over 150 learned articles including national and international journals, book chapters, and edited textbooks.
