Student Experience Committee

The Student Experience Committee (SEC) is established as a subcommittee of the Executive Management Committee (EMC).

The SEC operates within the governance architecture defined in the approved Student Experience Framework and is accountable to EMC. The Committee provides oversight and recommendations to EMC, which retains institutional decision-making authority.

The SEC provides coordinated executive oversight of the student experience across MIT. During the initial implementation phase of the Student Experience Framework, the Committee operates as a high-touch oversight body to ensure aligned and timely delivery of the Framework outcomes.

The SEC oversees the full student lifecycle, from recruitment through to graduation and alumni transition.

Framework Implementation and Performance Oversight

  • Monitor implementation of the Student Experience Framework and Strategy.
  • Review delivery milestones, timelines and cross-portfolio dependencies during the implementation phase.
  • Review institutional performance against QILT indicators, including Student Experience Survey and Graduate Outcomes Survey measures, together with retention, progression and completion data reported through Academic Board.
  • Recognise the relevance of student performance indicators to TEQSA risk assessment and institutional regulatory standing and suggest improvements to minimise identified risks.
  • Consider outcomes of relevant internal and external reviews affecting the student experience.
  • Monitor trends arising from student feedback channels, including institutional surveys, commissioned surveys and significant online student feedback platforms where reputational or performance risks may arise.
  • Identify systemic issues and material student experience risks, including regulatory and reputational risks, and escalate significant risks to EMC.
  • Recommend suggestions and improvements to EMC to enhance the student experience.
  • Use relevant data to develop a student experience narrative and other clear, holistic descriptions of the student experience guided by the Student Experience Framework.

Cross-Institutional Alignment

  • Facilitate coordination across academic and professional areas to support a coherent institutional student experience.
  • Provide appropriate reporting to EMC on cross-institutional initiatives and outcomes.
  • Review cross-functional initiatives and advise EMC on integration and prioritisation.

Student Voice and Partnership

  • Ensure meaningful student representation and dialogue within SEC processes.
  • Review consolidated student dialogue and feedback.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of student partnership mechanisms, including Staff–Student Consultative Committees.
  • Advise EMC on priority issues arising from student input.

Academic Interface

  • Monitor academic aspects of the student experience in coordination with Academic Board, without duplicating Academic Board’s authority over academic standards and curriculum.
  • Provide summary reporting to Academic Board on relevant academic matters at least twice per year.
  • Provide Academic Board with copies of SEC minutes.
  • The Executive Dean will report significant matters to Academic Board as the interface between the two bodies.

The SEC may:

  • request relevant information from departments;
  • establish time-limited working groups to examine specific issues; and
  • make recommendations to EMC.

Matters involving significant institutional risk, reputational impact or resource implications must be escalated to EMC.

The SEC does not:

  • determine academic standards or curriculum matters reserved for Academic Board;
  • manage individual student complaints or conduct cases;
  • exercise line-management authority over operational units; or
  • approve institutional policy, resourcing or structural changes.

The SEC reports to EMC following each meeting, providing key observations, risks and recommendations.

A standing agenda item includes the review of QILT indicators and other TEQSA-relevant student performance metrics to support continuous oversight of institutional risk and performance trends.

High-level student experience performance reporting is provided to the Board of Directors through EMC in accordance with the Student Experience Framework.

The Committee maintains appropriate documentation of its deliberations and decisions to support institutional assurance and regulatory requirements.

Members serve as institutional stewards and are expected to act in the best interests of MIT as a whole rather than as portfolio advocates.
