Easier access to your MIT email
Signing in to Gmail and the Google Workspace apps has changed slightly to make things simpler across your phone, tablet and computer. Here's what's different, and what to do if you get stuck.
General
We've improved how you sign in to your MIT Gmail account, so it's now easier to access on your phone, tablet or computer — using the same MIT login you already use.
No. Your email address stays exactly the same, and none of your existing emails or files are affected.
Your MIT email address (student:
studentID@stud.mit.edu.au, staff: username@academic.mit.edu.au) and your MIT computer login password.Your MIT account now gives you easier access to:
- Gmail — your MIT email
- Google Drive — store and share files
- Google Docs, Sheets and Slides — create and collaborate on documents
- Google Calendar — manage your schedule
- Google Meet — join video meetings and classes
- Google Forms — create surveys and forms
Signing in
- On desktop — go to AMS and select the Gmail link, or go directly to
gmail.com. - On mobile/tablets — open your email or Gmail app and select Add account.
When prompted:
- Enter your MIT email address (students:
studentID@stud.mit.edu.au; staff:username@academic.mit.edu.au). - Enter your MIT computer login password.
- You may be asked to re-enter your username or email address, depending on the device.
Open the Gmail app or your phone's email settings, select Add account > Google, then enter your MIT email address and MIT computer login password. If prompted again, re-enter your username or email.
Make sure you're entering your full MIT email address (not a personal Gmail account) and your current MIT computer login password. If it still doesn't work, contact the IT Service Desk.
This uses your standard MIT computer login password — reset it through the usual MIT password reset process.
Keeping your account secure
On a shared, public or MIT lab computer:
- Always sign out of your Google account when finished.
- Don't allow the browser to save your password.
- Close all browser windows before leaving the computer.
Never sign in to your MIT Google account on someone else's personal device — your account may stay connected and expose your email and files. If this happens accidentally, sign out immediately and remove your account from that device.
