The 2026 floods in Nepal have had a devastating impact on families and communities. For children who have lost a parent, the consequences can extend well beyond the immediate disaster, affecting their education, wellbeing and future.

As part of Melbourne Institute of Technology’s broader commitment to social responsibility, MIT Group Foundation is working towards a long-term program to help eligible children affected by the Bhotekoshi flood continue their education through to the completion of Grade 12.

The program will initially focus on Rasuwa and give priority to children experiencing severe economic hardship.

Long-term support beyond immediate relief

The proposed program is designed to address both the educational and wellbeing needs of participating children.

Support would include school and examination fees, books and learning materials, uniforms, transport, food and accommodation where required, insurance, psychosocial care and other essential assistance.

Rather than providing only short-term disaster relief, the initiative aims to give children who have experienced the loss of a parent the stability and support they need to remain in education and build their future.

Working with the Government of Nepal

MIT Group Foundation has submitted a formal proposal to the Government of Nepal and is currently working towards a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding.

Under the proposed framework, relevant government and Local Level authorities would lead the identification and verification of eligible children, help prevent duplication of assistance, facilitate school placement and monitor implementation. MIT Group Foundation would maintain oversight through annual budgets, individual progress and expenditure reporting, audit provisions and other accountability measures.

The proposed commitment remains subject to MIT Group Foundation Board approval, execution of the final MOU, verification of beneficiaries and agreed annual implementation plans.
