MIT graduation showcases top academic performers

The Melbourne Institute of Technology (MIT) celebrated the accomplishments of its graduating class during the annual graduation ceremony on December 3, 2024, at Grand Hyatt Melbourne. A highlight of the event was the recognition of two students who showcased outstanding academic performance and received the Awards for Academic Excellence.

Awards for Academic Excellence

The Awards for Academic Excellence recognise students for outstanding academic achievements based on the following criteria:

  • Completion of all academic requirements for graduation.
  • A Grade Point Average (GPA) of 6.5 or higher.
  • Passing grades in all units.
  • Completion of at least 50% of course requirements at MIT.
  • Eligibility for both full-time and part-time students except Masters (Research) degrees.

2024 Recipients

Alfredo Jr Gopez – Master of Networking
Alfredo Jr Gopez, a graduate of the School of IT & Engineering, was acknowledged for his academic achievements and work experience. He moved from a part-time job as a fryer to a full-time position as an IT Systems Developer at Avant Group, where he works on business process automation, IT infrastructure development, and cybersecurity management.
Alfredo said:
"As an international student, I started my journey feeling uncertain about the future. My time at MIT provided me with the skills and confidence necessary to succeed in the IT industry."

Rolando Ii Famadico Ilagan – Master of Engineering (Telecommunications)
Rolando Ii Famadico Ilagan, also from the School of IT & Engineering, was recognised for his academic excellence and innovative work. His capstone project, eShepard, uses edge AI technology for animal behaviour monitoring, aiming to improve efficiency in the livestock industry.

Rolando said:
"I worked on edge AI for animal behaviour monitoring as part of my capstone project. The course and lectures at MIT helped me build the skills needed for this work."

About the awards and ceremony

The Awards for Academic Excellence recognise students at MIT based on their academic performance. Recipients are chosen through a careful evaluation process.
The awards were presented during the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2024.
