Research Day at the Melbourne Institute of Technology (MIT), Melbourne and Sydney Campuses
On October 7, 2025, the MIT research community came together to showcase student and staff research projects, publications, achievements, and impact. The research students were provided a platform to display their research and receive feedback from other research students and academic staff. The academic staff proudly presented their publications, followed by a discussion of the quality of research and implications for scholarship of teaching by a discussant appointed for each presentation. The day's events aimed to facilitate networking, encourage innovation, and scientific understanding. The participants gained experience presenting and discussing their research, as they shared new knowledge and highlighted important developments within a field.
Some important, high-quality research themes presented on the day included Generative Artificial Intelligence in the education context, Marketing and Finance in the Australian context, and Machine Learning for the detection and classification of health issues. The Chair of the Academic Board, the Executive Dean, and other Academic Board members acted as judges to the presentations, selecting four winners. A/Professor Rajan Kadal’s team and Dr Samar Shailendra’s team won the scholarship of teaching awards, while Dr Jayasighe Hewa Dulige and Dr Amoakoh Gyasi-Agyei won awards for research-only presentations.
Masters by Research students contributed poster presentations and had the opportunity to talk about their research with academic judges appointed to judge the projects for clarity of purpose, relevance, significance, and feasibility of their projects, and organisation of ideas. Bisma Urroj, Ajit Jaiswal, Dipesh Kumar Upadhaya, and Rajdip Shakya won awards for best poster presentations on the day.
A senior academic from the Central Queensland University, Professor Santina Bertone, was the guest speaker on the day, who discussed the importance of publishing research and how to choose publication outlets.
MIT’s research day ended with a panel discussion on Impactful Research, chaired by A/Professor Shanthy Thuraisingham. Four senior professors from the college presented their research projects, outcomes and impact, followed by a discussion from the audience. Professor Stuart Orr discussed his work on strategy in the private sector.
Professor Adel Al-Jumaily discussed the impact of his projects on health, and Professor Johnson Agbinya discussed his research on electronics and communications. Professor Mohini Singh discussed the impact of her research on policy development for e-business infrastructure.
The Research Director, Professor Mohini Singh, described the event as a huge success that elevated awareness and appreciation of MIT’s research endeavours across the two campuses. The Research Day fostered exchange of information and the cross-fertilization of ideas to encourage the development of a strong research community among MIT academics and students.
