To study at Melbourne Institute of Technology, you'll need to meet a range of entry requirements, including academic qualifications and English language proficiency. These requirements vary depending on your chosen course and study background.
The information below outlines the academic requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. You should refer to the section that applies to your qualifications.
Mandatory requirements
International applicants must be 18 years of age at the commencement date of the course.
Domestic applicants must be 17 years of age at the commencement date of the course.
Academic requirements by country – undergraduate programs
Academic entry requirements for undergraduate programs vary by qualification.
Refer to the country-specific requirements below for the minimum academic criteria.
Applicants must also meet any course prerequisite requirements for their chosen undergraduate program. Please refer to the relevant course page for specific prerequisite details.
For IT programs, applicants should have completed Mathematics at Year 12 level or equivalent.
Applicants with recent secondary education
Applicants who have completed Year 12 within the last two years are required to meet one of the following:
- Successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), Higher School Certificate (HSC), or equivalent in their state or territory; or
- Successful completion of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.
Applicants must also meet the relevant course prerequisite requirements.
For courses with prerequisites (e.g. IT programs):
- Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any English (or equivalent)
- Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics (or equivalent)
Applicants with higher education study
Applicants may be considered for admission if they have completed full-time equivalent higher education study (typically equivalent to 4 units at MIT). If this requirement is not met, applications may be assessed based on previous academic history, including:
- higher education results
- Year 12 (or equivalent) results
- a personal statement
Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study
Completion of an AQF Certificate IV or higher from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Applicants with work and life experience
Applications may be assessed on a case-by-case basis based on one or more of the following:
- substantial relevant work experience demonstrating readiness for the course
- completion of relevant non-formal courses
- a personal statement outlining motivation, personal circumstances, and relevant life or work experience
Applicants may also provide supporting evidence such as community service, achievements, or additional work experience.
Requirements for applicants who completed Year 12 more than two years ago:
Applicants who completed their Year 12 studies more than two years ago but have not completed any VET or higher education studies are assessed according to their Year 12 results.
Applicants with a Bridging and enabling course
Successful completion of a Foundation Studies or Tertiary Preparatory program at a university, TAFE, or Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are assessed the same way as applicants under the above categories.
Applicants with International Baccalaureate (IB) results
Successful completion of the IB Diploma with at least 25 points.
For applicants with IB, a notional ATAR is provided by the local Tertiary Admissions Centre (TAC), which is used in the same way as ATAR for determining eligibility.
IB students who have not been awarded the diploma may be considered on a case-by-case basis if the student meets the following conditions:
- Student has undertaken the full IB Diploma Programme or was a retake candidate.
- Student has received a combined score of 20 or more total points.
- Student has undertaken Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and at least six HL/SL subjects.
- Student has not received the grade 'N' or 'P' for any subject or result, including award status and TOK/EE matrix points.
Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications
Applicants with overseas qualifications are required to demonstrate that their qualifications are equivalent to Australian qualifications. Qualifications will be assessed against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) using AEI Country Education Profiles (CEP) Online, and for suitability against the academic entry requirements of the program applied for.
Successful completion of Higher School Certificate (HSC) with First Division or 3.5 CGPA.
Successful completion of Diploma of Upper Secondary Education with a C grade average.
Successful completion of Senior High School -3 year (Gao San) with a minimum 80% average marks or equivalent.
Successful completion of Senior School Certificate (CBSE) or Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) with 60% average marks or equivalent.
Successful completion of SMA (Sekolah Menengah Atas) with a minimum overall average of 70%.
Successful completion of Certificate of General Secondary Education with an overall average of 80% or equivalent.
Successful completion of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade average of B.
Minimum subjects required to complete: 8 subjects.
Successful completion of General Secondary Certificate (Shahadat-al-Thanawaya Al-Aama) with an overall average of 70% or equivalent.
Successful completion of Upper Secondary School with a pass mark of 7.0 or higher.
Successful completion of Higher Secondary Education (Grade 12) or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 3.0.
Successful completion of National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 or equivalent with a minimum of 80 credits; 60 credits at Level 3 and 20 credits at Level 2.
Successful completion of the General Education Diploma/Thanawiya Amma with an overall average of 80% or successful completion of a Foundation Year after completing the General Education Diploma.
Completion of Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) or Intermediate Certificate (Pre-Eng. & Pre-Meds streams) with a minimum average of 65%.
Completion of Senior High School (Academic Stream) with 85% average grade.
Awarded after 2018 upon completion of senior high school (grade 12).
Completion of General Secondary School Certificate with an overall average of 70% or equivalent.
Successful completion of GCE A Levels with at least three passes (excluding language subjects), or completion of a Foundation Studies program offered by an Australian university or a nationally accredited institution deemed equivalent to the Australian National Standards for Foundation Programs.
Successful completion of the Upper Secondary School Graduation Diploma (Bang Tot Nghiep Trung Hoc Pho Thong) with a minimum average of 75% or an overall GPA of at least 7.5.
Applicants from countries not listed above will be assessed on a case-by-case basis against the academic entry requirements of the program, using AEI Country Education Profiles (CEP) Online.
Academic requirements by country – postgraduate programs
Completion of an Australian equivalent bachelor's degree.
For courses with cognate and non-cognate streams:
- Cognate stream: A bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related discipline (e.g. computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or networking).
- Non-cognate stream: A bachelor's degree in any discipline.
Master of Business Research
- Completion of a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant discipline.
- Applicants from non-cognate backgrounds will be assessed on a case-by-case basis to determine their suitability for the program.
Master of ICT Research
- Completion of a bachelor's degree in an ICT discipline.
Successful completion of a 4-year bachelor's degree from recognised institutions listed in AEI Country Education Profiles (CEP), with:
- a minimum of 55% (numerical grade), or B- (letter grade), or GPA of 2.75
AEI Country Education Profiles (CEP) Section 1 – all universities
- 4 years full-time study with 65%–69% or C+ or minimum GPA of 2.5
Section 2 – all universities listed below:
- National Institute of Public Health
- National University of Management
- Royal University of Law and Economics
- University of Health Sciences
- 4 years full-time AND
- Overall grade of 65%–69% or C+ or a minimum GPA of 2.5

- Bachelor's degree assessed as equivalent to an Australian bachelor's degree
Section 2 universities
- Successful completion of a 4-year full-time bachelor's degree (with entry based on Year 12 or equivalent); and
- Strong academic performance, typically:
- Grade 2.00 (85–89%) or higher, or
- equivalent descriptive rating of Good, Very Good, or Excellent
