English Language Requirements Federation University

Applicants must meet the minimum English language requirements for entry into a Federation University Australia program. The English language requirement for business and general science programs, is an academic IELTS Overall score of 6.0, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. Some programs, such as IT, will have a lower requirement, and some will require higher scores - refer to the relevant program page for more information.

Applicants are required to meet the minimum English language requirements for entry to a Federation University course.

English tests

English test results must be valid at the time of commencement of the program at Federation University.
If an applicant defers the semester of commencement, the English test must still be valid at the commencement of the new semester or an updated English language test provided.

Pathways to study

Students who do not meet the English Language Requirements for their program of choice may be eligible to study English and Academic Preparation (EAP) programs at MIT to improve their English skills to the required level.

Other qualifications

We can also accept the following academic qualifications as meeting our general English Language requirements if the applicant does not have a valid English test result. All qualifications must have been undertaken no more than two years prior to enrolment at Federation University.

Temporary Graduate visa holders currently working in Australia who have completed their degree in Australia more than two years ago will also be accepted as meeting our general English Language requirements.

Qualification Equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with no band less than 6.0

English Program from a Federation University recognised institution

Successful completion of an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) program

Australian TAFE or Higher Education provider

Successful completion of AQF Certificate IV or higher

Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education

Successful completion of Year 12

Foundation program from an Australian University

Successful completion of the Foundation program in Australia

Successful completion of 1 year of Higher Education study in Australia

We would recognise this as equivalent to an increase of half a band to 6.0 with no band less than 6.0

Successful completion of 1 semester of Higher Education study in Australia

We would recognise this as equivalent to increasing 2 bands from 5.5 to 6.0

Other Countries

Citizens and passport holders of one of the following countries: Canada, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, or the United States of America.

Students who have completed at least five years of study in one or more of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, or the United States of America.
