Aims & Objectives

The first stage of the research project is carried out under the guidance of an academic supervision team. The project will focus on a topic of significant value to the selected research discipline, selected from the issues considered in the first trimester elective units and developed in the research methods units in the second semester of first year. This stage of the research project is assessed through a confirmation process. The student will prepare a confirmation report and containing an introduction, literature review and methodology. This assessed by the confirmation panel which determines whether or not the student has successfully completed the first stage of the research project and may continue on to the second stage.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Undertake efficient design of a substantial research project and develop a rigorous project proposal.
  2. Critically appraise research literature and findings.
  3. Formulate a research framework encompassing problem formulation, research design and development, and thesis validation using relevant tools and methodologies conventional and specific to the discipline.
  4. Independently conduct research in consideration of ethical standards and relevant standards specific to the discipline.
  5. Disseminate research findings to both academic and general communities in written and verbal communications.
