English Language Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum English Language Requirements for entry into a Melbourne Institute of Technology course. The English Language Requirement for courses such as undergraduate business and networking is Academic IELTS Overall score of 6.0, with no band less than 5.5 or equivalent.

Applicants will need to provide one of the below forms of evidence to demonstrate their English language proficiency.

English tests

English test results must be valid before the date of commencement of the course at MIT. MIT will assess all applicants individually and where the applicants do not meet English Language Requirements, MIT will consider packaging the main course with an English and Academic Preparation (EAP) program.

English Language requirements exemptions
 

MIT may exempt applicants with following qualifications before the commencement of a course at MIT.

Australian Study

Applicants who have completed the following qualifications in Australia may meet MIT’s direct entry requirements:

Successful completion of 1-semester full-time study (0.5 EFTSL) Example: For a unit with 15 credit points, 15 divided by 120=0.125

Other qualifications

Applicants who studied formal English subjects in the following academic qualifications in secondary schools may meet English language requirements for Undergraduate courses:

  1. GCE (General Certificate of Education) ‘A’ or ‘O’ Level English with a minimum grade of B.
  2. International Baccalaureate Diploma: Minimum of 4 in English A1 or A2 (Higher and Standard levels) or minimum 5 in English B (Higher Level)
  3. Cambridge International IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (A levels and O levels) with a minimum of C grade in English Language, or a minimum grade of B in English as a Second Language (ESL).

 

First Language English

Applicants who hold a valid passport of or have completed Senior Secondary and Tertiary studies from a country where English is the first language may be eligible for direct entry into MIT’s courses. MIT recognises the following countries:

MIT English Language Placement Test

Applicants may be eligible to sit MIT English Language Placement Test.  Applicants who achieve an overall score of 160 in MIT English Language Placement Test may be eligible for direct entry.

Successful completion of EAP (English for Academic Preparation)

Applicants who have completed an appropriate EAP level at MIT or other NEAS accredited ELICOS providers may be eligible for direct entry in MIT courses.

Pathways to study

Applicants who do not satisfy minimum English language requirements have an option to study English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) at MIT English Language Centre. The Centre offers ELICOS at different skill levels. Class levels are determined based on the following:

  • Independent English Language Test Score
  • MIT English Language Placement Test before the commencement date
